The Historical-Political Studies program emphasizes historical context, political systems, policy analysis, and global awareness. Students will develop highly marketable skills in critical reading, persuasive writing, evidence-based argumentation, research design, data interpretation, and public communication. This integrated approach prepares graduates for careers in politics, government, public service, law, education, business, and nonprofit work, giving them the analytical tools and real-world understanding needed to succeed in a rapidly changing professional landscape.

Department of History and Political Science Core


All majors in the Department of History and Political Science require the following 8-credit Department Core

Major Requirements


The combined major is 43 credit hours, including the above department core.

  • Four (4) History (HIST) courses (12 credit hours)
  • Four (4) Political Science (POSC) courses (12 credit hours)
  • Three (3) Electives from History or Political Science (9 credit hours)
  • Two (2) course intensifications at the 200-level or higher 
    • One in a History course relating content to Political Science (1 credit hour)
    • One in a Political Science course relating content to History (1 credit hour)
