Graduate Education Programs


The School of Education (SOE) offers programs grounded in the values of scholarship, leadership, and service. The graduate programs are responsive to the evolving needs of schools and society and prepare educators and school personnel to advance equity, excellence, and effectiveness in diverse educational settings.

The School of Education currently offers a Master of Science in Special Education, a Master of Arts in Teaching, a Master of Arts in Education (available as an elevation from an endorsement program), and a Master of Arts in Education in Educational Leadership, as well as non-degree programs leading to Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) endorsements or approvals, including Bilingual Education, English as a Second Language, and Learning Behavior Specialist I.

Requirements for Admission

Admission requirements for School of Education programs are specified for each program. Applicants must complete the admissions process for to their selected degree or endorsement/approval program prior to the first term of enrollment. Any exceptions require the approval of the Director of the School of Education. Applicants must register for courses prior to the first class meeting..

English Proficiency

Students whose native language is other than English are required to pass the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 250 (online).

Transfer of Credit

Up to six semester hours of appropriate graduate-level credit from an accredited college or university may be accepted in transfer at the time of matriculation. Applicants must submit:

  • A copy of the course description as published in the catalog of the institution attended, and
  • An official transcript demonstrating a grade of B or better and completion of the course within the previous five years.

Residency Requirement

Once candidates (including those accepted conditionally) are matriculated into a School of Education graduate program, all required courses and electives must be completed at Dominican University’s main campus or an approved off-site locations. Any exception to this policy must be approved in writing by the Director prior to enrollment in coursework at another institution.

Course Registration

At initial registration, each candidate is assigned a graduate faculty advisor. Candidates are expected to consult with their advisors in planning and developing their programs. Advisor approval is required to complete registration in School of Education programs.

Registration dates are published in advance each term on the Registrar’s Office page in MyDU (Dominican University’s internal website). Candidates may register in person or online after the designated registration period begins. No registrations are accepted after the published late registration deadline.

Dominican University reserves the right to cancel any course for which enrollment is insufficient to support course offerings.

Degree Completion

Candidates have five years to complete their degrees. In exceptional circumstances, a one-year extension may be granted with approval of the Director.

Candidates seeking additional time beyond this period must reapply to the School of Education and meet all program requirements in effect at the time of reapplication.
