Library and Information Science - M.L.I.S

The American Library Association-accredited Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree program is designed to provide a sound conceptual basis for developing leadership-oriented careers and, at the same time, provide the educational foundations for lifelong professional development. The 36-semester hour curriculum is composed of a range of courses to prepare students for professional responsibilities in a broad spectrum of libraries, media and information centers, and consultancies.

Degree Requirements:

Complete 18 additional semester hours, chosen from among remaining LIS courses numbered below LIS 900.

Requirements for All Graduate Degrees


  • Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Complete the degree within six years.
  • Submit an application for graduation to the Office of the Registrar by the filing deadline for the semester when requirements will be completed.

Fast-Track Graduate Pathway


The Fast-Track Graduate Pathway offers undergraduate students at Dominican University an expedited path toward the Master of Library and Information Studies program (MLIS). The Pathway allows students who meet the eligibility requirements to take select graduate-level courses while completing course requirements for their undergraduate major. 

For students who fulfill the Fast-Track Pathways eligibility requirements, the first step is to apply for conditional admission into the MLIS program. If conditionally admitted, students then register for up to six (6) semester hours of graduate-level courses toward the MLIS degree. Students must receive registration clearance from their academic advisor before registering for graduate courses. 

Eligible undergraduate students may complete the following graduate-level courses in their Senior year:

Continuing students will be granted full admission into the MLIS after the Bachelor’s degree is conferred.
