LIS 823 - Introduction to Bookbinding 1.5 Credit Hours Semesters Offered Spring
Physical books continue to exist around us even as the information world becomes increasingly digital. From community archives, to popular fiction in public libraries, to school libraries, to children’s sections, books find themselves experiencing regular use and, as a result, regular repair and preservation. This course will provide students with an overview of the global evolution of the book; methods of preservation, restoration, and conservation for books and bound paper materials; familiarity with bookbinding tools and preservation materials; and an opportunity to partake in a six-hour hybrid workshop day during which the student will experience hands-on bookbinding practice. As we progress through this course, the professor and students will regularly identify the ways preservation standards and repair needs interact with potential community resources in order to identify and define approaches to best balance between access, preservation, and community need. Pre-req: LIS 701 or MAYL 701
