LIS 903 - Advanced Doctoral Seminar Synthesizing Theory

3 Credit Hours
This doctoral seminar, offered over eight weeks, is designed to help PhD students strengthen their ability to work with theory in dissertation research. The course focuses on identifying, assessing, and combining theoretical perspectives in ways that support well-grounded research questions and methods. Students will consider how different frameworks, models, and lenses can be used together, and when it is most appropriate to rely on a single approach. Class sessions will emphasize discussion and application. Through shared readings, seminar dialogue, and targeted exercises, students will practice moving from abstract concepts to concrete research design choices. Attention will be given to the relationship between theory and method, as well as to contemporary considerations such as ethics, social justice, and inclusion. By the end of the seminar, students should be able to articulate the strengths and limits of the theories they choose, recognize opportunities for theoretical synthesis, and craft arguments that connect conceptual foundations with practical research decisions.
