CRIM 270 - Police and Society in Critical Perspective 3 Credit Hours
This course presents social inequality as the constitutive force in the institutional creation and reproduction of policing in the United States and in other societies. Rather than viewing policing as solely crime prevention and solving, the course explores how policing entails criminalization and social control. Topics include agency structure and function as explanatory factors in officer misconduct; the relationship between police, politics, and law; racism and sexism within police departments; community and police relations; technology/media and policing; policing reform and abolition, and police work and trauma.
Prerequisite(s): CRIM 242 , CRIM 255 , CRIM 265 , or SOC 110 .
This course will satisfy the core area requirement in social justice and sustainability.
