HIST 421 - History of Islamic Banking Systems 3 hours This course seeks to provide students with a general overview of the evolution of the Islamic banking systems from the seventh-century Arabia to the present, which are based on the Holy Quran, Islamic law (sharia), and the prophetic tradition (sunna). We will discuss the methods of lending and borrowing available to Muslims and how crucial concepts such as profit, interest, and alms giving have been interpreted, understood, and practiced over time and space. We will also explore specific case studies about Islamic institutions, existing both inside and outside of the United States. The course will combine lectures, readings, classroom presentations, and field trips in the Chicago metropolitan area, and some guest speakers will also be invited to share their knowledge, backgrounds, and experiences with students.
This course may be applied to the global history concentration.
Prerequisite(s): One history course.
