SWK 673 - Play Therapy 3 hours This course focuses on encouraging the unique development and emotional growth of children through the process of counseling using expressive therapies. The content of the course introduces a distinct group of interventions including play and other skills as integral components of the therapeutic process. A major focus of the course involves instructional and experiential opportunities for the student to develop skills that provide children with the appropriate developmental materials that can be applied to children of various ages. This course is designed to provide introductory training on play and other expressive therapy techniques designed for various populations including children, adolescents and families. The course will focus on the various models of play therapy and the use of play as both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool for a variety of childhood problems including PTSD, abuse/neglect, disruptive behavior disorders, chronic illness and developmental delays. Additional training on family play therapy techniques will be provided as well as approaches designed for use in schools. The major theoretical approaches and techniques used in the practice of play therapy and other expressive interventions shall be the focus of this course. Special emphasis is placed on identifying techniques used for various treatment considerations, setting up the play therapy room, and working with parents and the community in the treatment of the child.
