Chemistry - B.A./B.S.


Majors in chemistry may elect to earn the Bachelor of Science degree or the Bachelor of Arts degree. Major requirements are the same for both degrees.

Additional Requirements:


  • Physics and mathematics requirements should be completed by the end of the sophomore year.
  • The satisfactory/fail option may not be used in any courses, including collateral courses, required for the major.
  • A minimum of five courses in the major field must be completed at Dominican.
  • Advanced students in chemistry are encouraged to register for Chemistry 460 (Independent Research). 

Chemistry Education


 

Teacher Licensure: Secondary Education


Students who wish to teach chemistry in grades 6 through 12 complete a major in chemistry and they complete the School of Education’s Teacher Education Program for secondary licensure.

Chemistry Requirements

  • Chemistry major as described above
  • One additional course in biology

Teacher Education Program

  • Three state tests: the Test of Academic Proficiency, the Elementary/Middle Grades content test, and the grades K-9 Assessment of Professional Teaching

  • 100 hours of field experience

  • Professional portfolio

  • Clinical Practice (one full semester) in a middle or secondary school classroom

Teacher Licensure: Elementary Education


Students who wish to teach grades K-9 may major in chemistry and complete the School of Education’s Teacher Education Program for elementary licensure. In addition to an elementary license, students would be eligible for a middle school endorsement in physical science. Students complete the major in chemistry and the following:

  • Professional education courses as outlined in the School of Education  section of this bulletin

  • One life science and one physical science course; one of these must have a lab (one of the courses will count toward the natural science areas studies requirement)

  • Three state tests: the Test of Academic Proficiency, the Elementary/Middle Grades content test, and the grades K-9 Assessment of Professional Teaching

  • 100 hours of field experience

  • Professional portfolio

  • Clinical practice (one full semester) in an elementary or middle school classroom.
