The Applied Business major prepares students to develop the leadership, communication, and organizational skills needed to support workforce growth and organizational success in today’s evolving professional environments. Combining principles of adult learning, organizational development, leadership, and workplace training, the program equips students to help individuals and organizations adapt, grow, and thrive. Designed for working adults, the major prepares graduates for careers in corporate training, human resources, workforce development, adult education, and organizational leadership. The program also provides a strong pathway for continued academic and professional advancement through graduate programs such as Dominican University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) and MA in Trauma-Informed Leadership.

BPS Degree University Core Curriculum Requirements


30 credit hours required; requirements may be met through coursework at other institutions

Major Specific Courses


In addition to satisfying the Core Curriculum requirements for the Bachelor of Professional Studies above, students must complete 42 credits in the major and related areas.

Major Specific Courses


Thirty-three (33) credit hours of major specific courses and electives. Students are encouraged to bundle courses to complete microcertifications along the way that meet their professional interests.

Employee Relations Microcertification


The Employee Relations micro-certificate equips students with the communication, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills needed to foster positive workplace relationships, support employee engagement, and contribute to healthy, productive, and inclusive work environments.

Environmental Stewardship Microcertification


The Environmental Stewardship micro-certificate equips students with the knowledge and practical strategies needed to promote environmental responsibility and sustainability through ethical leadership, organizational planning, and environmentally conscious decision-making.

Organizational Development and Compliance Microcertification


The Organizational Development & Compliance micro-certificate prepares students to strengthen organizational effectiveness by exploring employment law, workplace compliance, leadership strategies, and the development of systems and structures that support ethical, efficient, and legally compliant operations.

Workplace Compliance and Union Leadership Microcertification


The Workplace Compliance & Union Leadership micro-certificate prepares students to lead effectively within unionized and regulated work environments by developing skills in labor relations, collective bargaining, workplace advocacy, employment law, and organizational compliance.

Workplace Learning Design Microcertification


The Workplace Learning Design micro-certificate prepares students to effectively teach and support adult learners in professional and workplace settings through the application of adult learning theory, instructional design principles, and effective online and organizational training practices.

Major Specific Electives


30 credit hours required

  • Students can choose any 200-level or higher courses

BPS Additional Information


  • Each academic year consists of six 8-week sessions
  • Most classes are offered in an 8-week format
  • Transfer credit of up to 68 semester credit hours from community colleges or up to 90 semester credit hours from a combination of community colleges and 4-year colleges or universities may be granted.

The Bachelor of Professional Studies degree requires 120 total credit hours comprised of the following:

  • University Core Curriculum Requirements (30 credit hours)
  • Major Specific Courses and Electives (42 credit hours)
  • Seminar Requirements (18 credit hours)
  • Electives (30 credit hours)

BPS Accelerated Degree Options


Bachelor of Professional Studies/Master of Social Work

High-achieving undergraduates can apply for the Bachelor of Professional Studies/Master of Social Work (MSW) accelerated degree. Students admitted to this option can enroll in MSW courses before completing the BPS and have up to 30 MSW credit hours apply to both their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Additional information is available through the College of Applied Social Science - TBD [Inactive]  advising office.

Bachelor of Professional Studies/Master of Library and Information Science

High-achieving undergraduates can apply for the Bachelor of Professional Studies and, in their senior year, take up to two library and information science courses with approval of the director of the School of Information Studies. The 6 Information Studies credit hours apply to both their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Additional information is available through the College of Applied Social Science - TBD [Inactive] advising office.

Bachelor of Professional Studies/Master of Business Administration

High-achieving undergraduates can apply for the Bachelor of Professional Studies and, in their senior year, take up to two MBA courses with approval of the director of the Brennan School of Business - TBD [Inactive]. The 6 BSB credit hours apply to both their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Additional information is available through the College of Applied Social Science - TBD [Inactive]  advising office.
