Italian Studies - B.A.

Major Requirements:  30 semester hours beyond ITAL 101

Required Courses

Complete all four (4) courses. Only 9 semester hours count toward the Italian Studies major. Students placing out of any elementary or intermediate language courses will have these requirements waived. Remaining credit hours can be met through Italian electives.

Required Concentration

Students will choose one of the two major concentrations below.

Italian Language and Culture Concentration

This path toward the Italian major blends advanced language proficiency with a comprehensive study of culture. Those students interested in the internship at Chicago’s Italian Trade Agency are encouraged to pursue the Italian Language and Culture Concentration.

Take at least (2) of the following advanced level language City Perspective courses. The remaining 15 semester hours can be completed through additional advanced level language City Perspective courses or through Italian electives.

Italian Culture in Context Concentration

This path toward the Italian major highlights the study of culture by way of texts in translation. In addition to ITAL 201  and ITAL 202 , students complete the remaining 21 semester hours from the Italian Elective Courses.

Additional Requirements:

For either concentration, no more than two (2) 1.5 credit hour courses may count for the major. A minimum of 17 credit hours must be completed at Dominican.

Teacher Licensure: Italian grades K-12

Students who wish to teach Italian in kindergarten through grade 12 must complete a major in Italian Studies with a concentration in Language and Culture and a major in K-12 Education. The K-12 Education major is a co-requisite and must be completed alongside an Arts and Sciences major; it cannot be completed as a standalone degree.

Students should consult both their Italian and Education advisors early in their academic careers to plan appropriately.

To be eligible for a Professional Educator License from the Illinois State Board of Education, students must complete the Italian Studies major with a concentration in Language and Culture and the K-12 Education major, followed by Student Teaching and the Student Teaching Seminar.
