The double major in sociology and criminology offers an integrated investigation of social institutions with a focus on crime in relation to the construction of social hierarchies based on class, race, gender, sexual identity, immigration status, age and other factors. Students who complete the sociology-criminology double major receive a career-enhancing liberal arts education to be well-positioned for employment in a number of occupations in the public or private sector and for graduate study in sociology, criminology, and related social sciences, social work, education, public policy, or law.
Students interested in majoring in both sociology and criminology should follow the requirements outlined below to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree with an integrated double major in Sociology and Criminology

Sociology and Criminology Double Major Requirements:
Forty-nine credit hours chosen in conference with an advisor, to include the courses outlined below. A minimum of 18 credit hours (six courses) in the major fields, must be completed at Dominican. Foundation Courses
Thirteen semester hours in foundation courses consisting of: Sociology/Criminology Courses
Complete twenty-four credit hours from courses numbered between 200 and 360 in CRIM, SOC, or designated programs listed below: Four credits must come from taking CRIM 255 Introduction to Criminology Theory Courses
Attain twelve credit hours from CRIM or SOC courses numbered at or above 380 listed below. Six of these credit hours must come from taking: Additional Information
Course substitutions are permitted when deemed necessary in consultation with an advisor and subject to the approval of the department chair. STA (study abroad) courses are permitted as course substitutions in consultation with an advisor and subject to the approval of the department chair. Students are also encouraged to acquire practical experience through internships, community-based learning opportunities, and study abroad or domestic study courses. For additional information regarding the sociology program and its concentrations, students should consult an advisor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology. |
