Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Social Justice

The PhD in Applied Social Justice is an interdisciplinary program that develops expertise in the theoretical components and practical/professional applications of social justice. The curriculum includes extensive research training, expanded theoretical understanding, and opportunities for high level integration of knowledge into specific professional practice.
The PhD comprises a core set of 4 research courses, 3 foundational courses, content courses from particular professions/disciplines, and culminates in a dissertation.

Required courses:
Required Courses (36 hours, all courses are 3 credit hours)
Additional Courses- Maximum 15 credit hours
Additional Courses- Maximum 15 credit hours
Students from different professions can utilize existing CASS graduate programming as content courses for the PhD. For example, students can enroll in courses from the following programs:
- An Endorsement Program in SOE
- A Certificate Program in SOIS
- A Certficate/Track in SSW
- Conflict Resolution Certficate
- Trauma -Informed Practices Certficate
Dissertation Hours (6+ credit hours)
*= Students may request to have up to 6 credit hours of prior graduate work count towards the degree requirements. These requests will be reviewed by faculty and require faculty recommendation and Dean approval.
**= Students may pursue an independent study, including and especially practicums/internships to count towards the total hours for the degree, but not as a substitute for the required research courses.
