Language Learning and Bilingual Education Minor and Endorsement Program


The School of Education’s 18-credit-hour undergraduate minor in Language Learning and Bilingual Education is designed for students interested in English as a Second Language Education and/or Bilingual Education. Students complete six courses and requirements outlined below and upon completion of the minor will also be eligible for the ESL and/or Bilingual Endorsement to add to their Professional Educator License.

Bilingual Education Endorsement and English as a Second Language Endorsement


  • Complete 100 clock hours in bilingual field experiences (embedded in coursework)
  • Pass the Target Language Proficiency Exam https://www.il.nesinc.com/PageView.aspx?f=GEN_Tests.html
  • Complete the following 6 courses (18 credit hours total)
    • EDUC 386 *  - Diversity, Language, and Culture (25 field hours)
    • EDUC 411 * - Methods and Materials for Teaching English as a Second Language (25 field hours)
    • EDUC 416 *  - Foundations of Language Teaching and Learning *(no field hours)
    • EDUC 413   - Assessment of ELL Students (25 field hours)
    • EDUC 415   - Linguistics (no field hours) 
    • EDUC 412   - Methods and Materials for Teaching in Bilingual Classrooms (25 field hours)

*Courses required in the Elementary Education Program

English as a Second Language Endorsement


  • Complete 100 clock hours in English as a Second Language field experiences (embedded in coursework)
  • Complete the following 6 courses (18 credit hours total)
    • EDUC 386 *  - Diversity, Language, and Culture (25 field hours)
    • EDUC 411 *  - Methods and Materials for Teaching English as a Second Language (25 field hours)
    • EDUC 416 * - Foundations of Language Teaching and Learning (no field hours)
    • EDUC 413  - Assessment of ELL Students (25 field hours)
    • EDUC 415  - Linguistics (no field hours) 
    • EDUC 417 /EDUC 373 *  - Literacy Development for ELL Students (25 field hours)
