Drivers’ Education Endorsement


Drivers’ Education Endorsement

The Driver Education Teacher Endorsement prepares State of Illinois Certified Teachers with the opportunity to teach Driver Education in Public High Schools in the State of Illinois.  The 18-hour graduate program of study consists of 12 hours of core required classes and 6 elective hours delivered predominantly online, with some field experiences.  

An endorsement in safety and driver education shall be issued when the applicant provides evidence of having completed 18 semester hours of college credit in the field, with at least 12 semester hours at the upper-division or graduate level (as posted on the individual’s official transcript), distributed as follows:

 

  1. 3 semester hours in injury prevention or general safety;    
  2. 9 semester hours in driver education that include:  
    1. Driving task analysis (introduction to driver education);  
    2. Teaching driver education in the classroom; 
    3. Teaching the laboratory portion of the driver education course. 
  3. 9 semester hours chosen from at least four of the following areas:
    1. First aid  
    2. Psychology of adolescents or young adults;  
    3. Any safety-related issue relevant to driver education;  
    4. Advanced driver education in use of simulation and multiple car programs; 
    5. Health and wellness;  
    6. Care and prevention of injuries;  
    7. Issues related to alcohol or drug abuse; or 
    8. Driver education for students with disabilities.
