French and Francophone Studies - B.A.

Goals for French & Francophone Studies Majors and Minors

Our first goal is to help students achieve an understanding and command of the syntactic structures and linguistic foundations of the French language. Students will be able to describe, narrate, and debate abstract concepts with proficiency in written and spoken French. Students will apply a variety of methods of analysis in their approach to literature, film, and other media. Students will engage in critical dialogue with primary and secondary sources.

Our second goal is foster students’ awareness of cultural biases and ethnocentric views. Students will understand the socio-historical context of numerous French and Francophone cultural productions across time periods and geopolitical locations.

Major Requirements:

Required Courses:

Thirty (30) credit hours beyond FREN 102 . Students must register for course intensifications for semester-long courses taught in English to count toward the major. The intensification will consist of customized French language review, writing instruction, dialogue and debate. A minimum of one-half the courses in the major field must be completed at Dominican. Students who study abroad must have approval from the discipline director for their courses to count toward the French and Francophone major or minor.

Teacher Licensure: French grades K-12

Students who wish to teach French in kindergarten through 12th grades complete a major in French and complete the School of Education’s Teacher Education Program for K-12 licensure. Additional French Education Requirements:

  • Professional education courses including EDUC 404  - Instructional Strategies for Teaching Modern Foreign Language
  • 100 hours of field experience
  • Oral Proficiency Interview: students must score at the minimum of advanced low level
  • State Required edTPA
  • Clinical Practice (one full semester) split between an elementary and either a middle or a secondary school classroom
