Health and Wellness -B.S.


 

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Health and Wellness is designed for students interested in gaining knowledge and skills in the areas of health, fitness and wellness.  The major is targeted for those seeking careers in promoting public health, and in helping individuals increase their overall wellbeing. The major provides the necessary background for students to succeed in the dissemination of preventative healthcare and wellness practices including nutrition and fitness, as well as to plan and deliver proactive health and wellness programming within communities and work environments. Students gain knowledge and skill in understanding and advocating for health and wellness policies, practices, and environments. Students apply health and wellness program assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, and advocate for health and wellness in a capstone Internship experience. 

 

BS in Health and Wellness Graduate Outcomes

 

The BS in Health and Wellness major will focus on several learning outcomes for students who will need to be proficient in communication, both written and oral skills, have basic science knowledge, develop information literacy skills, and have a broad understanding of disciplinary knowledge, including community-based learning and programming skills.  These goals include:

1.    Have a basic understanding of the science of the human body and how the body functions.

2. Understand the concept of health disparity/inequality and factors that might lead to differences in health outcomes across populations in creating a health education/promotion program.

3. Involve community in assessing need for health promotions programs.

 4. Develop a health education/promotion program by planning, implementing and evaluating these programs.

5. Design and manage a health education/promotion program for a selected target group including theory, objectives, activities, management and evaluation.

 6. Be able to explain how different areas of health are interrelated and serve as a resource for health education promotion.

7. Communicate effectively both in writing and orally, including report and proposal preparation and in interactions with the media to communicate public health information.

8. Be able to understand the role of advocacy in the policy formation process and be able to promote and advocate in support of a health education policy position.
