Italian Studies

The Italian Studies Major prepares students for life and work in a globalized world by providing them cultural immersion and fluency in a Language other than English.  These skills are developed on a foundation in the humanities that focuses on textual and artistic analysis, critical reading and thinking, and intercultural understanding and interpretation.

A degree in Italian Studies opens the door to a wide array of opportunities in the professions.  These include: graduate and law school and degrees that prepare students in the arena of international diplomacy and international business. Language proficiency aligned with cultural comprehension improves prospects for students seeking a profession in education and to careers in fashion, import/export, public relations, and all types of work that require communication with diverse populations. 

Students are encouraged to combine an Italian Studies Major with majors such as Political Science, International Relations and Diplomacy, International Business, Marketing, Graphic Design, or Fashion Merchandising.

Learning Goals

Students will:

  1. Express themselves effectively in spoken and written Italian to share information, reflections, and opinions over a relatively wide array of topics in both formal and informal settings (interpersonal communication).
  2. Identify and understand the value of cultural artifacts, practices, and perspectives of the Italian-speaking world and express how these relate to the present and to the place and time in which they were conceived and circulated (cultural knowledge).
  3. Recognize and reflect on difference and diversity by comparing and contrasting culturally situated beliefs, behaviors, and traditions of the Italian-speaking world with those of their own culture (cross-cultural awareness).

The Italian division encourages students to participate in study abroad programs.
