LIS 731 - Subject Analysis

An in-depth study of subject analysis methods used by the Library of Congress and an overview of classification theory and principles that support user information seeking in a contemporary context. Focus is on the applications and analysis of the Library of Congress Classification schedules and Library of Congress Subject headings. Discusses the classification principles and concepts that illuminate the contemporary subject access challenges and issues in the use of Internet search engines juxtaposed with the legacy library methods (classification and subject headings). Addressing subject access approaches (UDC, Bliss, MeSH, AAT, TGM, FAST) and others.
