LAS 391 - U.S. Immigrants: Modern African Labor Migrants3 hours This seminar focuses on the experience of African labor migrants to the United States. What are the driving forces behind African immigration to the United States? What is the African way of living the American dream? What are the mutual perceptions of these members of the new African diaspora and their host communities? What role do Africans play in the making of modern America? How do Africans strike a balance between the need to adjust to the American way of life and the desire to preserve their original identities? What failures and successes frame the lives of Africans in the United States? By using the common texts and a wide range of internet and other resources, we will investigate these key questions through a multidisciplinary approach and several categories of analysis, such as ethnicity, religion, gender, and age.
