ARTH 296 - African Art3 hours An introduction to the ancient and traditional arts of Africa. This class explores the ideas and notions expressed visually in sculpture, painting, ceramics, textiles, and architecture and describes their relationships to man and culture in Africa. Students will embark on a general socio-cultural survey of the traditional arts of African ethnic groups, which include the ritual of art, art-making, and artworks as well as the social and political texts of art in city-states, chiefdoms, and rural settings. Includes traditional genres as well as postcolonial and contemporary art in Africa.

This course will satisfy the fine arts core area requirement and the multicultural core requirement.
