HNID 305 - Violence, Religion, and the Hope for Peace: Can We Survive the Clash of Civilizations? 3 hours In this course, students will explore the essential role played by religious diversity in the world today in both creating and also diminishing tensions and conflict among and between cultures and civilizations. Primary emphasis would be on the major religions of the world, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism, but with regard to the important role of “minority” faiths - Buddhism, hybrid forms (e.g. Indonesian religion), and native religions. This is an examination of the current religious dimensions of international and national tensions in the light of challenges and issues created by globalization, the possibility of nuclear war, and global climate change. The course will draw on the resources of the Interfaith Youth Core to involve students experientially in interfaith encounter. Service Learning included.
