Readings, films, and discussions will explore class formation, working-class communities, workplace culture and collective action including unionization. We will explore how industrialization, deindustrialization, and the construction of a service economy have shaped the experience of the American working class. How race and gender intersect with class will be central to our study. Americans are decidedly self-conscious and even anxious about discussing social class.
