POSC 373 - American Democracy3 hours Democracy was not a new form of government when the United States was formed, but American democracy was a unique experiment in self-government that revolutionized the practical application of democracy. This reading-intensive course will examine what makes American democracy-American. This will be primarily accomplished by studying two major commentaries on American democracy written by non-Americans: Tocqueville’s Democracy in America and Lord Bryce’s The American Commonwealth. American democracy seems to work, –why, how, and for how long?
This course will satisfy the social sciences core area requirement.
