LAS 239 - Conflict, Competition and Community3 hours Amid the rise of globalization and the increasing interconnectedness of the world in the 21st century, the notion of community has grown more varied and complex. In this course, students will explore the opportunities and challenges that arise as they encounter diverse cultures; we will ask how our ideas of community are re-defined when we embrace (or come into conflict with) worldviews that are different from our own. We will also examine the cultural role of competition, particularly in its connections to debates over social conflict (as in capitalism) and celebrations of diversity (as in sports).
