THEO 279 - Art, Beauty, and Contemplation: An Introduction to Theological Aesthetics3 hours This course explores the intersection of art and theology through a consideration of the major themes and issues that inform a theological aesthetics. The focus of our investigation will be on the nature of symbolic seeing that permits one to go beyond mere appearances so as to discern God’s presence in works of art and in all creation. Students will investigate the spiritual dimension of art with particular reference to the meaning of beauty, light, space, time, and creativity, and their relation to nature, the senses, the imagination, and contemplation.
This course will satisfy the theology core area requirement.
