SOC 385 - Critical Theoretical Approaches to Race and Ethnicity3 hours An examination of race theory in the United States from a “critical” perspective. In doing so, it highlights the ideologies, attitudes, behaviors, and structures that produce and maintain racial inequality. This perspective focuses on race (and racial inequality) as grounded in both past and current structures and social interactions. Critical race theory provides a perspective that recognizes and emphasizes that racial inequality stems from sources beyond the individual (i.e., the social structure). Thus one goal of this course is to provide basic tools for examining race through this critical race theory/sociological perspective.
