LAS 211 - Bound Together: Life in the Natural World 3 Credit Hours With respect to the common theme of “Life in the Natural World,” this seminar will focus on the delicate but necessary tension between nature and civilization. By engaging with a variety of genres-art, literature (poetry, fiction, non-fiction), architecture, music, and pop culture (including traditional media, like movies and television, and social media)-we will consider how humankind has defined its relationship with nature, as well as how humankind has honored and/or undermined that relationship. Pope Francis’ Laudato Si will serve as the touchpoint for this exploration. Members of the seminar should develop a stronger understanding of their own place in and responsibility for the web of life. As Chief Seattle wrote: ”Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves./All things are bound together./All things connect.”
Prerequisite(s): Sophomore status.
This course will satisfy the core area requirement in social justice and sustainability
