CAS 347 - Rhetoric and Public Advocacy 3 Credit Hours People’s engagement in contemporary social movements, such as “Arab Spring,” “BlackLivesMatter,” “Standing Rock,” and “#MeToo,” depends on the relevance of the cause to the individual as well as the importance society assigns to the cause at any given time. How issues become relevant depends largely on how advocates communicate their messages to publics. In this class, students gain perspectives and experience as both critical consumers and informed producers of public discourse focused on advocacy. Students will become familiar with basic persuasive appeals and theories of rhetorical action, engage in critical analysis of varied public advocacy arguments and rhetorical events in face to face and digital spaces, and prepare persuasive interventions intended for real and/or imagined audiences on matters considered important today.
