ID 112 - Many Rivers to Cross: Navigating Blackness and Philosophy

3 Credit Hours
This course examines primarily what it takes to make a seamless, and unflappable transition from high school to post-secondary institution, with particular reference to African and African-American youths. In other words, it studies strategies for academic success.  Second, it examines “being black in America” and many other fascinating philosophical topics, from “Black is Beautiful” to “Black Lives Matter,” guiding students on an engaging journey through the “Black Atlantic” World - from Africa and Europe to the Caribbean, and the United States - shedding light on what it means to be an African American. It is a highlight of the complex philosophical debates and class differences within the black experience in America. The road to freedom for black people in America, according to Dr. Louis Gates Jr., has not been linear: rather, much like the course of a river, full of loops and eddies, slowing and occasionally reversing current.  Finally, it is meant to start a philosophical discussion on the meaning of life, and what it means to be human.

This course will satisfy the core area requirement in social justice and sustainability.
