CASS 912 - Qualitative Methods as Social Justice Practice 3 Credit Hours The Social Sciences, and certainly social justice, cannot entirely be understood through the quantification of variables. A “thick description” is needed for thorough understanding of factors that threaten social justice and actions that achieve it. Furthermore, qualitative methods provide the opportunity for centering and privileging lived experiences and grounding data in “theory in flesh.” This course will provide an overview of the major traditions in qualitative research and techniques for analysis and emphasize the use of liberatory qualitative methods such as testimonio, autoethnography, and visual methodologies as tools for advocacy. This course will provide opportunities for application through student-initiated projects or instructor provided opportunities. Qualitative research is a writing-intensive undertaking, so we will use weekly writing exercises to develop each of the components needed for rigorous and innovative qualitative research.
