HNSM 173 - Finding Our Way Through Good and Evil

3 Credit Hours
Humans are an amazing mixture of good and evil, capable of combining lofty ideals and foul degradation, according to a character in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. The novel’s characters seek to find their way amid “both abysses at once” as the story evokes dynamics of freedom and destiny, faith and despair, conscience and wickedness, torment and love, suffering and ecstasy-challenging the reader to ponder whether, how, and to what extent the novel’s world illuminates their own reality. This course will accept that challenge as students dialogue with the text and with each other in ways that elicit and interrogate our convictions, assumptions, and deepest questions.
