HNSM 180 - Family in Faith and Doubt

3 Credit Hours

This course will examine the issues of faith and doubt in the context of family, broadly conceived.  The common text in the Honors first-year seminars is Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, often seen as one of the greatest novels in world literature.  Through this text, we will examine past and modern ideas of family. Is religion a key aspect of family cohesion; must families share a similar belief system to cohere?  We will discuss the ramifications of a “secular age” alongside a world that remains predominately religious, and the dynamics of reason and faith.  What does freedom look like in this context?  We will examine how we can accurately conceive of the concept of family in a world of disruption and division and discuss its role in human flourishing.  What does it mean to speak of a human family, a national family, a community family, a “traditional” family, even a cosmic family?  Students will be able to express their own views on these topics by reading the “Brothers K,” in-person classroom discussion, and writing.
