HIST 130 - Sickness and Health in America

3 Credit Hours
This course will introduce students to the history of American disease, illness, health and wellness within larger, intersecting contexts of race, gender, disability, and economic status. Sickness and health are scientifically, socially and culturally constructed and change over time. Our health and illness are racialized, gendered, sexualized, classed, aged and consumed in public and private. Using primary and secondary sources, this course will explore the development of medical professions and public health and  the construction of disease, illness and health and medicine in American history.

This course will satisfy the core area requirement in history or humanities and arts.

This course will satisfy the core requirement in meaning, value, and truth.
