ITAL 235 - Italy: History and Cinema 3 Credit Hours In this course we will examine the historical events that shaped Italy through the middle of the 20th century. We will study Italy’s position during World War II- paying particular attention to the divisions that were created within the country. Post war Italy moves from economic distress to being one of the world’s leading economies by the second half of the century. How are these events captured in Italian cinema? Federico Fellini, Roberto Rossellini, and Vittorio De Sica are the directors who bring us this history through their films. We will consider important films such as The Bicycle Thief, Rome Open City, and La Dolce Vita.
This course will satisfy the core area requirement in history or humanities and arts.
