HIST 346 - Making a Living: U.S. Working-Class History 3 Credit Hours This course examines the American working-class experience since the 19th century. Readings, films, and discussions will explore class formation, working-class communities, workplace culture and collective action including unionization. We will explore how industrialization, deindustrialization, and the construction of a service economy have shaped the experience of the American working class. How race and gender intersect with class will be central to our study. Americans are decidedly self-conscious and even anxious about discussing social class. This course will “make class visible” and explore the experience of American working-class people, their lives at work, at home, and in politics and popular culture. This course may be applied to the United States history concentration.
