ITAL 506 - Immigrant Literature: Contemporary Writers in Italy

3 Credit Hours
This course will explore Italy as a crossroads of cultures and languages by reading novels and poetry by contemporary writers whose stories speak of loving two nations, two languages, and two selves.  In facing the complexities of belonging, these authors recount the complications of coexistence with longtime residents of Italian major cities, like Rome and Turin, weaving social and political issues into the fabric of global histories. This course will study the history and laws around Italian immigration and emigration and will pay particular attention to works by Igiaba Scego, Gabriella Ghermandi, and Amara Lakhous.

Prerequisite(s): Consent of department. Graduate level students only.
