ITAL 502 - Early Modern Literature

3 Credit Hours
This course will examine two seminal works of the Early Modern period.  These works were written as Italy becomes the center of Renaissance literary production.  Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron presents one hundred short stories framed by events of the plague of 1348. Francesco Petrarch’s Canzoniere presents his lyric poems written in celebration of Laura.  We will read selections of both works to understand the importance of these two writers and their influence on western literature.

Prerequisite(s): Registration requires consent of department. For graduate level students only.
