ITAL 310 - Italy at the Crossroads of Language and Culture

3 Credit Hours

Honors:Explorations and Investigations.

Known to the world as il bel paese, Italy is a country of intensely variegated identity. This course will explore Italy as a crossroads of cultures and languages by reading novels and poetry by four contemporary writers: Igiaba Scego, Gabriella Ghermandi, Amara Lakhous, and Kossi Komla-Ebri.  These are stories that speak of loving two nations, two languages, and two selves.  In facing the complexities of belonging, these authors recount the complications of coexistence with longtime residents of Italian major cities, like Rome and Turin, weaving social and political issues into the fabric of global histories. This course is taught in English.
