SPED 662 - Academic Methods of Special Education 3 Credit Hours The purpose of this course is to prepare candidates to use a variety of instructional strategies and to create learning experiences that encourage K-12 students’ development across many skill domains. The content will focus on a balanced approach to reading instruction, written language, and mathematics instruction at the K-12 levels, and support of instruction in the middle and secondary content areas (social studies, science). Principles and techniques associated with evidence-based practices and methods for assessment, planning, and instruction will be addressed, including delivery of tier 2 and 3 of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports. An emphasis will be placed on various forms of lesson planning (direct instruction, inquiry, and UDL) and learning strategy instruction for middle and secondary schools. Technology to support students’ academic development will also be explored.
