LIS 717 - History on Display: Museums, Exhibitions and Public History 3 Credit Hours
This course will introduce students to the public display of history in museums, exhibitions, and civic spaces. This course will not only look at the history of museums and public history in America, but will also invite students to collaborate to create an exhibition for the upcoming year on a topic relevant to Dominican history on Dominican University’s campus. Therefore, this course will engage with the practical elements of history projects for a diverse public. The exhibition will have a physical dimension that will hang on campus for one calendar year (January to December), but students will also create a more extensive digital version that will be available for years to come. Students will learn how to design an exhibition around a historical theme, engage in historical research to flesh out the content of the exhibition, how to format panels, how to print and hang an exhibition, and how to deploy multimedia to make the exhibition come to life. They will be informed by their in-person visits to local history exhibitions in greater Chicago, thereby honing their practice in the design and content of their exhibition. Students will learn some key ethical and curatorial issues in the field, and will learn methods of creating public engagement with history. Students will also learn how to showcase their work for their future work portfolios, demonstrating their skills in design, curation, communication, and public engagement.
