LAS 459 - Mask, Individual, and Society 3 Credit Hours Through a study of texts such as Machiavelli’s The Prince and Castiglione’s The Book of the Courtier, we will explore the various roles an individual plays in society. We all wear masks, both real and imaginary, in our interactions with others. What do these writers tell us of the nature and function of such masks? What is the ethical status of masking? What are its social functions? How does masking help shape the individual and society?
