SWK 518 - Grief and Loss 3 Credit Hours In this course, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of grief and loss with special attention to the complexity of loss and how it is experienced,as well as how loss impacts the environment via micro, meso and macro systems. Loss experiences explored will include death, but will also encompass other loss experiences including but not limited to foster care, incarceration, job loss, gentrification and deployment. Through exploring various losses, we will also identify and examine disenfranchised and ambiguous losses. Students will learn and apply grief and loss theories and approaches through a social work lens of practice in an effort to advocate and support grieving individuals and communities. Students will also engage in efforts to promote and create healing spaces that recognize and validate various losses.
Prerequisite(s): Psychology major and senior standing.
