LAS 156 - What’s Beer Got to Do With It? Beer and the Examined Life

3 Credit Hours
This seminar uses “beer” to examine the context of social statuses (of the self) in society. Students will be invited to reflect on the social construction of beer-its “history”, its perceived consumers, its “imagery”, etc. Students will talk about how these social constructions manifest in the real-life experiences of themselves and others—and especially how those experiences vary on the basis of social statuses. By exploring social constructions, lived experiences, and social statuses in the context of beer, students should have a more holistic understanding of the self and society. That understanding provides them with a lens to understand the social construction of their current and future self. It should also allow them to think mindfully and reflectively about how social statuses may help or hinder the construction of the self.
