SWK 667 - Anti-Oppressive Practice with Immigrants and Refugees

3 Credit Hours
This is the second of two required courses for students in the Global Social Work track with specialized content that focuses on culturally relevant clinical practice with immigrants and refugees through an application of a human rights and social justice framework. This course will build on foundational knowledge of theory and interventions with specific tools and frameworks that will inform working with transnational populations.  Students will expand their knowledge base necessary to effectively work with immigrants and refugees, with a specific emphasis on trauma exposed immigrants and refugees. Furthermore, students will consider the process of migration, resettlement, displacement, cultural imperialism, and transnationalism and the implications for mental health and well-being.  Finally, because practitioners working with immigrants and refugees may be witnesses to the horrors experience pre, during, and post migration, students will also consider vicarious trauma and the importance of self-care.
