POSC 233 - Political Utopias 3 Credit Hours How have the perfect political societies and the terrifying political societies been represented in philosophy, literature and film? This course will examine the dystopic political association of many, how they (may) come about, and how close they are (if they are not already here). A major project of the course will be the creation of the “perfect” society. This will be done in thought, but if successful, we will offer “Making the Perfect Society Happen” next summer in an undisclosed location, open only to those that possess desired genetic characteristics and pass a series of physical and mental challenges to prove worthiness. Among others, the course will involve brief or extensive coverage of More’s “Utopia”, Skinner’s “Walden Two”, and Swift’s travels to “Houyhnhnms.” The dystopia may be examined through classics such as “We,” “Brave New World,” “Fahrenheit 451,” and “1984”. Some films may include “A Clockwork Orange,” “Minority Report,” and “V for Vendetta.” Take this course NOW or you will not be allowed to participate in the BRAVE NEW WORLD!
This course will satisfy the core area requirement in social science.
