CRIM 256 - Media and Crime 3 Credit Hours This course will examine ideas about crime, criminals, and public safety in popular and news media. We will examine images of criminality, narratives of rising crime rates, the figure of the crime fighter, assumptions about the roots of crime, framings of justice and safety, and portrayals of utopic and dystopic societies. The class will give special focus to depictions of race, gender, and sexuality related to criminality and victimization, as well as media constructions of children and police. Finally, the class will consider the relationship between media and violence, along with the role of the media in moral panics.
