SWK 642 - The Resilient Social Worker

3 Credit Hours
This course will invite students to develop their capacity to maintain balance and connection in the face of a rewarding and demanding profession, and life in general. Students will observe their current ways of responding to their environments in the context of stress, resilience, and mindfulness research. Each student will learn to support their current strengths and resources, expand on these, and build new skills. Community resilience will be examined as a tool for transformation. Students will also develop an understanding of themselves as a member of a community. Areas of focus include the following: identifying the sources of your resilience and support, establishing separate nourishing spaces and practices, incorporating mindfulness into everyday life, identifying and affecting your stress response, developing supportive connections, setting personal and interpersonal boundaries, naming goals for intra- and interpersonal living, taking time to replenish and celebrate successes, as well as connect to community resilience programming. Students will also study a trending witness of community resiliency.
