SWK 625 - Race, Gender and Human Rights in The Guatemalan Context 3 Credit Hours This course seeks to expand your understanding of how all of our lives are shaped by social structures and the historical contexts in which we live. Fr. Brackley risked his life when he went to El Salvador to continue the work of the Jesuits who were murdered by the military in November 1989. Sometimes students were confused when they heard him say El Salvador would ruin their lives, especially because he said it with such joy. What he meant was that if you truly open your heart and your mind to the journey, if you hear the message of the Salvadoran people you can never be the same. In the same way, we hope that you hear the promise and hope of the Guatemalan people as they work toward transformation and social justice. We hope that you fall in love and are “ruined for life” with new awareness of the human rights struggles in Guatemala and the risks that ordinary people face on a daily basis in order to work toward social justice. This course seeks to expand your understanding of how all of our lives are shaped by social structures and the historical contexts in which we live. Specific objectives include: to encourage cultural understanding, to become aware of and respect Guatemalan norms and values, to learn of the lived economic reality of the Guatemalans, and to promote social justice
Prerequisite(s): SWK 513 and SWK 553
