SWK 514 - History of Social Work & Social Welfare

3 Credit Hours
This is an introductory course into the history of the profession of social work and social welfare policy in the U.S. This course defines social policy; examines the social, economic, and political circumstances that give rise to social problems and their policy solutions; and explores frameworks for analyzing these solutions. Specifically, this course examines the social problem of poverty in the U.S. and the policy response to it. Students will learn the basics of social welfare policy provision in the U.S., the fundamentals of social welfare policy in at least four areas (aging, health care, family policy, and incarceration), and an understanding of how ideological values, politics, and power shape the racialized and gendered social construction of social problems.

Prerequisite(s): Psychology, sociology, or crimology major and senior standing
